Oh Mother, Let’s Brunch!

“Mom: A title just above queen”—UNKNOWN

By Kathleen Vivaldi

The American Mother’s Day tradition dates back to the 19th century, when Anna Jarvis, a social activist, originally founded the “Mother’s Day Work Clubs,” designed to give guidance and support to women on how to care for their children prior to the Civil War.

Mother’s Day morphed from Jarvis’ “clubs” to become an official holiday in 1914, on the second Sunday of May, and typically consisted of presenting mothers with flowers, cards and giving them a day off from cooking and cleaning.

Today, that tradition continues, often revolving around a festive restaurant meal, because even modern mothers like to be waited on and not have to clean up after. According to the National Restaurant Association, in 2017, 92 million Americans ate out on Mother’s Day, with 25 percent choosing brunch. Although many families will have the same idea this year and restaurants will be bustling, here are three in the northern Lake Tahoe region that are hosting elegantly delicious Mother’s Day brunches (and all take and recommend advanced reservations for this special day). Mom will love seeing your smiling faces, of course, but the views of the lake and mountains aren’t bad either.
